HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PAST YEAR:
JOY OF JAZZ SOUTH AFRICA:
August of 2013 proved the culmination of two years of work, with Peress holding the drum chair in a Tribute to Johnny Dyani - exiled South African composer and contra bassist. Peress 4-part series at NY Historical Society's "Slavery in New York" exhibit, led him to be chosen as the rhythmic component of a very meaningful exposé of a South African atrocity during Apartheid... 12 Shows in 16 days, beginning with a concert at JOY OF JAZZ FESTIVAL, JOHANNESBURG, with the final concert taking place in SOWETO, on the very street that NELSON MANDELLA and BISHOP TUTU grew up on!
TEXAS JAZZ FESTIVAL:
Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, Peress returned with his band to perform main stage at the TEXAS JAZZ FESTIVAL in his hometown! His childhood doctor, and classmates from Elementary through High-school showed up in what proved to be an emotional "full circle" for Peress - first time every performing in his hometown as a professional!
JAMAICA JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL:
January began with a return engagement at JAMAICA JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL 2014, with Paul's band featuring the legendary CHAKA KHAN! This concert also featured original TOTO lead singer, BOBBY KIMALL. The band played for a crowd of over 15,000 and "Unleashed Musical Magic"... with a "Memorable performance with patrons singing and dancing along..."
BARBADOS, BRITISH WEST INDIES:
Peress followed the Jamaica show with a trip to Barbados, performing with several local bands, including sitting in with sax virtuoso and mentor to local jazz artists, ARTURO TAPPIN, and culminating with a night leading the island's finest straight ahead jazz artists in Hole Town at Braddie's...
NYC APOLLO THEATER:
In April, the PAUL PERESS PROJECT appeared in a powerful night of music featuring B.B.&Q. BAND, the DELPHONICS, and THE DRIFTERS...
ST LUCIA JAZZ FESTIVAL, BRITISH WEST INDIES:
This is Peress 4th return to this great island... His first St Lucia experience was recording "Yard Styles" with then reigning Soca Monarch ANDREW "YARDIE" HAYNES. Peress has performed for both HEINEKEN JAZZ ST LUCIA, and the ST LUCIA JAZZ FESTIVAL, and this shall be his 5th and 6th shows on the island, as special guest with guitar legends RONALD "BOO" HINKSON, and CARL GUSTAVE...
ST. KITTS MUSIC FESTIVAL:
In June, Peress returns to St Kitts for the 8th time! He has performed at the festival 7 times, and this year, THE PAUL PERESS PROJECT features the one-and-only DENIECE WILLIAMS "And I've Just Got to Be Free, former CHICAGO lead singer, BILL CHAMPLIN "After the Love Has Gone", and BOBBY KIMBALL "I Bless the Rains Down in Africa"... Also in Peress band are DEAN BROWN, STU HAMM, & MITCH FORMAN...
CANT LET GO - OUR LATEST CD:
On all these performances, Peress has been featuring his compositions from the latest release, "CAN'T LET GO", with Jeff Golub, Glenn Alexander, Mitch Forman, and Dave Mann, a horn section of Tower of Power alumni... Peress' long foray into divergent musical styles unearths a combination of Jazz, Rock, Brazilian, and Funk influences in an eclectic body of work, with themes of peace, longing, and lost love driving the vocal tunes, and from-the-heart melodies giving life to the instrumentals.
